Nalini

Arpita Shah

I went to the Impressions gallery to see an exhibition by Arpita Shah called Nalini.

Her work is an on going photographic project that explores the intimacy between her mother, her grandmother, and herself.

It explores how their histories are connected to one another and how their memories and physical bodies are entangled with each other.

Her project focuses on the notion of home, belonging and shifting cultural identities, through looking at their lives in India, Scotland and the Middle East.

This photographic project is a way to explore a cultural liniage and learn more about a long distance family.

Her portrait images have a quiet distance to them, they are facing away from the camera and the viewer never sees the front of their face. I like this about the images, it adds mystery and leaves room for the viewer to think about the meaning of the images.
