Dana Lixenberg
Imperial Courts
I went to see Dana Lixenberg's exhibition of her three channel video instillation, Imperial Courts at the Stedelijk Museum.
Lixenberg's 69 minute instillation shows life on the streets of Imperial Courts. This area is known for its gang Violence, however Lixenberg chooses to show it in a different light. The scenes she shows documents residents relaxing and having parties, she documents the neighbourhood coming together and celebrating. Showing a completely different side to the neighbourhood.
Walking through the Stedelijk Museum, the building is very well lit, everything is bright with white walls, however when you walk into the room exhibiting Imperial Courts, you are suddenly shrouded in black and tree screens appear in front of you.
The way Lixenberg has chosen to present her work immerses the viewer, everything is pitch black only being able to see the videos. when one screen goes off another goes on the way the screens switch over keep the viewers' attention.
